 William Gibson

Born in a vacation town on the coast of South Carolina, Gibson spent his early years moving around Virginia. A bookish, nerdy child obsessed with science fiction, he struggled academically and was sent to boarding school in southern Arizona.

After his mother died when he was eighteen, he left school without graduating and moved to Canada to dodge the Vietnam War draft. He spent the sixties as a self-proclaimed hippie before settling in Vancouver, earning an English degree from the University of British Columbia.

He published short stories before being commissioned to write a novel—Neuromancer became a surprise smash hit, winning the Hugo, Nebula, and Philip K. Dick Awards—the first novel ever to earn this trifecta of science fiction honors.

 Historical Context

Cyberpunk & Technology: Neuromancer helped define the cyberpunk genre, deeply tied to technological advances of the 60s–90s. The novel emerged from a cultural moment when personal computing, the internet, and genetic engineering were rapidly transforming society.
